Annapurna Trek: From Hidden Valleys to Thorung La pass
A Comprehensive Overview of the Annapurna Trek
Sherpa Trekking's Annapurna Trek is a special and engaging journey. It goes through Nepal's Annapurna range. Furthermore, we carefully designed this route in order to show the region's hidden treasures. This path avoids the usual Annapurna Circuit trails.
Our trek starts in Besisahar. From there, we take a jeep to Dharapani. This begins an adventure off the main paths. Following this, we go to the secluded Nar Phu Valley. This area needs a special permit. As a result, few tourists visit it.
This well-planned trip connects you deeply not only with nature but also with culture. Specifically, you will see amazing mountain views. In addition, you will see old Buddhist traditions in real settings.
Moreover, two high mountain passes are on this trek. The main one is Thorung La Pass. It is 5,416 meters high. Crossing these challenges gives you great views. You will see the huge Himalayan mountains. The view includes snowy peaks and ice valleys. Consequently, it offers a truly deep mountain experience.
Beyond the scenic views, this route offers more. It lets you experience the land and local culture. Engage directly with mountain communities along the way. By doing so, you can learn about their old ways of life. This allows you to gain insights that most tourists don't get. Ultimately, the Annapurna Trek shows you Nepal's hidden cultural treasures in an authentic way.
Annapurna Trail Itinerary: From Nar Phu to Thorung La pass
For your Annapurna Trek, the journey begins in the vibrant city of Kathmandu. From there, you'll start a scenic drive to Besisahar. Following this, a jeep will take you to Dharapani, and your trek begins there on the main Annapurna Trail.
However, after two days, you'll veer off path towards the hidden Nar Phu Valley. This secluded area remains unspoiled and offers a truly authentic experience. As you delve further into the valley, you'll notice the landscape changing to the arid Tibetan Plateau.
Along the way, you'll come across ancient monasteries. Also, some old settlements have lasted. Once you reach Phu village, explore the local area. Or, you can hike to the Himlung Himal base camp for a day.
The next destination on your Annapurna trek is the Naar Phedi monastery. Here, spend a night among the monks and immerse yourself in their daily life. This unique experience offers a genuine connection to the local culture.
Moving on from Nar, prepare for a hard trek across the remote Kang La pass. This crossing leads to Ngawal, where you'll rejoin the classic Annapurna Trail. As you continue your journey, you'll pass through local villages.
Then, set your sights on the formidable Thorung La pass. After crossing the pass, you'll reach the sacred site of Muktinath, a deeply holy place.
Finally, as your adventure nears its end, you'll descend through the stunning Lupra Valley. This final stretch allows you to reflect on the amazing journey you had.

Our trek begins in a gorge, following the Annapurna Circuit's main trail. As we reach Timang, the landscape gradually opens up, offering glimpses of the surrounding area.
-
Koto marks the checkpoint for our Nar Phu Valley permits. Once cleared, we subsequently trek into another gorge. From there, we continue heading towards our teahouse, which is located in a forest.

Today's trek is a remarkable journey through varied terrain. We begin by leaving the forest behind. Subsequently, we navigate steep gorges alongside rushing waters. As we gradually ascend, the gorge gives way to a barren landscape, offering expansive views of the surrounding terrain.
-
The trek to Kyang is a relatively easy hike with moderate altitude gain. You will walk along undulating trails that lead through the valley. As you continue your trek, the scenery will gradually become drier. Consequently, this increasingly arid landscape provides a captivating and unique trek.
-
Our journey takes us further into the heart of the Nar Phu valley. The impressive, snow-capped Kang Guru (6,981m / 22,904 ft) dominates the landscape, providing a stunning backdrop to our trek.
Shortly before reaching the village, we pass through an ancient stone Buddhist gate and a mani wall. This sight is reminding us of the region's deep spiritual roots. After that, we arrive at Phu Goan, a village with authentic Tibetan-style houses.
-
Phu Gaon, nestled in the heart of the Nar Phu Valley, and its surroundings offer plenty to explore.
Opposite the village stands a hill filled with carefully placed mani stones and chortens. Additionally, the Tashi Lakhang monastery is a significant site, although not always open. Moreover, the hill provides stunning vistas of the area. From here, you can spot the distant Himlung Himal and the secluded Mustang region.
For those seeking adventure, a lovely day hike to Himlung Himal base camp is possible. The trail is easy, with a gradual ascent, making it accessible for most hikers. As you approach, the isolated peak of Gyaji Khang dominates the view.
-
We track back our trail until our lunch break. Shortly after, we hike on a new trail that leads us to a wooden bridge.
Crossing the gorge, we reach the guesthouse situated next to the monastery. The rooms are clean, and the monks' cooking is delicious. Moreover, visiting the nearby monastery is a must.
-
A steep climb departing from the monastery marks the beginning of our short trekking day. Upon exiting the gorge, we reach an open area featuring chortens and mani walls. At the same time, the snow-capped Kang Guru provides a stunning backdrop.
As we follow the trail, Pisang Peak dominates the landscape. Similarly, Nar, like Phu, is an authentic village with Tibetan houses and surrounded by vast farmlands.
-
We begin our trek early in the morning, setting out while it's still dark. The first few hours involve a gradual ascent. As we approach the pass, the climb becomes increasingly challenging. During the ascent, take a moment to look back and appreciate the breathtaking mountain views.
Upon reaching Kang La pass, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panorama of the famous Annapurna range. After descending, we'll arrive at Ngawal and rejoin the main Annapurna Trail.

The trail to Yak Kharka is delightful, with an easy path and stunning views.
-
Today's trek is short but steep. You'll start with a brutal climb right from the teahouse. However, after three hours of hiking, you'll reach the final teahouse before the Thorung La pass. Once there, take plenty of time to walk around and even climb up to a nearby viewpoint.
-
This is the final high pass of the Annapurna Trek. We begin early, embarking on a long, gradual ascent. Upon reaching the pass, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Dolpo and Mustang regions.
Afterwards, a lengthy descent leads to Muktinath, where we'll visit the renowned temple and the must-see Buddhist site.
-
Despite the bus park at Muktinath, we choose to hike to Jomsom. Soon, we follow the trail, crossing a pass into the Lupra Valley. Here, you can visit the sole Bön monastery outside the Dolpo region.
As we take the final steps towards Jomsom, your Annapurna Trek concludes.

Conquering the High Altitude of the Annapurna Range
The Annapurna Trek offers diverse altitudes that challenge even seasoned trekkers. You'll start in the warm, bamboo-filled lowlands. Then, the trail gradually ascends towards the Nar Phu Valley.
As you reach 4,000 meters, you can opt for a higher hike. The path leads to Himlung Himal Base Camp at 4,900 meters. After this excursion, you'll descend moderately before reaching Kanga La Pass.
At 5,320 meters, Kanga La Pass helps you acclimatise. It prepares you for crossing Thorung La Pass later. Our itinerary ensures you experience the trek's highlights while adapting to the altitudes.
When is the best time for the Annapurna Trek
This incredible Annapurna Trek shines brightest during two key times: spring and autumn. Spring unfolds from March to May, painting many trails with rhododendron blooms, though Nar Phu sees fewer. This season offers bright views and comfy temperatures.
Autumn, from September to November, is just as lovely. After the monsoon, clear air reveals amazing mountain panoramas. The crisp, clear weather boosts views, great for photos and distant vistas.
Winter treks bring big challenges. Cold and heavy snow often blocks high passes. Avalanche risk increases, thus making it unsafe for most people.
So, for the best and safest trip, we recommend planning your trip for spring or autumn. These seasons let you fully enjoy the natural beauty and the rich culture of the Annapurna mountain range.
